ABB launches new version of high-voltage DC technology to double transmission capacity

According to ABB, the next generation of lightweight HVDC technology will enable transmission systems to reach 3 GW. This will allow 350% of electricity to be delivered per square meter, which is beneficial for applications such as offshore wind power.

ABB's latest lightweight HVDC technology, also known as VSC HVDC, is capable of increasing the voltage to 640 kV and increasing the transmission distance to 2000 km.

This technology can become a reality thanks to the development of semiconductor power electronics that provide greater control.

ABB has deployed 18 light HVDC technology projects around the world, including the largest power offshore wind interconnects.
